KUALA LUMPUR, August 24 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia Bhd, in collaboration with Conservation International, on Tuesday organised a dialogue with captains of industries to emphasise the importance of sustainable business practices.

BHUBANESWAR: Is it corporate or consumer social responsibility? Are business houses for business or social purpose, or for both? Can Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) become a mandatory regulation or self proclaimed government propaganda? Is CSR means growth monopoly or bridging gap between rich and poor? Is CSR democratic or transparent? Can CSR become the DNA of business?

A few days ago, in a comment about the proposed mandatory corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw pointed out that when you make something compulsory, all you get is cosmetic actions rather than something that will actually have an effect. She also gave an interesting example drawn from her own experiences.

The Orissa government will enact a law, making it mandatory for the corporate houses, operating in the state, to invest a certain percentage of their profit on peripheral development.The quantum of investment to be made by the industrial houses under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) will, however, be decided while formulating the law.
