The world's urban population now exceeds the world's rural population. What does this mean for the state of our cities, given the strain this global demographic shift is placing upon current urban infrastructure? Some policy points:
- inclusive policies for cities should acknowledge the dynamics of the urban divide and support informal business institutional arrangements
- Freedom of expression, equal opportunities for business development, recognition of cultural rights and adequate housing are all equally important.
- Strategies for inclusiveness must be based on a clear and cogent representation of the way the four dimensions of equality – economic, social, political and cultural – can be integrated concurrently into the day-to-day lives of the population.
- The “right to the city” encapsulates the four dimensions of equality, which, combined, will
guarantee inclusiveness.
