EU: Study on nano claims on consumer product labels |

In recent years, "nano" has become a "hype", and "nano" products are promoted to be novel and superior to the customary ones. In their attempt of attracting consumers’ attention, manufacturers have their specific reasons for putting the term "nano" on a product’s label or on the product's website. an internet search for consumer products with a nano claim on the European market was carried out.In total 33 products from 23 different manufacturers were identified and included in the study. For 32 products the claims were mentioned on the website of the manufacturer, for 23 of them also on the product label. Download report from EU here.

New York Times: Nearly 90,000 Minis Recalled for Fire Hazard |

After an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Mini is recalling almost 89,000 of its turbocharged models because they could catch fire when the engine is off. In a report filed over the weekend, BMW, the parent company of Mini, told the safety agency that the auxiliary water pump designed to dissipate heat from the turbocharger was the cause of the hazard. New York Times: Ford Recalls 450,000 Vehicles in Two Separate Actions |

January 13, 2012, 1:42 pm According to documents filed earlier this week with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford is recalling about 450,000 minivans and crossovers in two actions.The agency began investigating the problem with the Freestar and Monterey in July 2009 after receiving complaints from owners who said the vehicles would suddenly lose power, sometimes when traveling at highway speeds.Ford responded by telling the agency that even if the converter were to fail, it wouldn’t be a safety problem because the vehicle would remain controllable and could still coast, “during which it can be safely maneuvered and stopped because the engine continues to run.” to Read More

New York Times: With 3.8 Million Passenger Cars, Honda Leads All Manufacturers in Recalls for 2011 |

Automakers recalled about 15.5 million vehicles last year compared with 20 million in 2010, according to figures released on Friday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The figure was the fourth lowest in the last decade. Honda and its Acura division led all manufacturers with 3.9 million vehicles recalled in 17 actions. The company has had several expansions of a recall for a driver’s side air bag that can inflate too powerfully. Honda has linked the defect to two deaths. read more.
