Greenpeace ranks markets on food safety PDF Print E-mail

Greenpeace released its China 2010 supermarket ranking of food safety Tuesday, announcing that Carrefour and Auchan tied for first, while Tesco China and Chengdu Ito Yokado failed to satisfy the survey's quality requirements.

"We'd like to give local residents a reference for supermarket food quality," Greenpeace food and agriculture campaigner Wang Weikang told the Global Times.

Wang explained Greenpeace issued a questionnaire survey to 20 supermarket chain headquarters this year, asking for their stances on genetically modified food (GMF), pesticide control, and their food tracking system.

"We rated the supermarkets based on their answers and relevant information provided on their websites," she said.

The environmental protection organization carried out random supermarket inspections nationwide as part of their survey and conducted investigations for GMF and pesticide contamination in nine supermarkets in the capital this year.

Earlier this month, Greenpeace said an independent lab study showed that cowpeas sold at the city's Tesco markets were found to contain isocarbophos, a highly toxic pesticide.

A spokeswoman for Tesco China, who insisted to remain anonymous, said on December 9 that they would conduct another third-party inspection on their cowpeas. However, the spokeswoman told the Global Times Tuesday that the results were still not available.

Wang said they would expand the scope of their supermarket inspections and ranking system. Jenny Lou's, Merrymart and other local supermarkets will be included in the coming years.
