| Be serious about stopping illegal banners - Sam Wong |

|
THE advertisement banners industry is mushrooming in Malaysia. Everyone is using this type of media to promote their business, legal or illegal. Everywhere we go, we can see the banners. This has provided an opportunity for syndicates to offer loans to people, with much misery caused to borrowers. Although there had been campaigns to clear the moneylender banners, these were not effective. Besides, the banners contain dubious claims. Many tuition centres use innovative slogans to promote themselves, such as assured success or money back guarantees. In addition, there are slimming centres that promise body weight reduction of a few kilos in a few days, and there are the “Ubat Kuat Lelaki” stickers pasted on road name signs, lamp posts and traffic lights. We also have those event promotion banners that are left hanging even when the event is over. There should be a code of practice for operators to follow when they apply for a licence to ensure consumers are given accurate information. Enforcement has to be strengthened.
