The products, Slimway Herbs, BMI-9 Xylimming Night capsule and BMI-9 Xlymming Day capsule, were found to contain the scheduled poison, Sibutramine.

KUALA LUMPUR: The public is advised to stop the sale, distribution and use of the slimming products Slimway Herbs, BMI9 Xylimming Day Capsule and BMI9 Xylimming Night Capsule with immediate effect as they have been found to contain the scheduled poison "Sibutramine".

The Health Ministry's Pharmaceutical Services Division director Eishah A. Rahman said the use of these herbal products without supervision by doctors could lead to adverse effects like high blood pressure and other cardiovascular complications.

HONG KONG: Rajam Murugasu, a plantation worker in Malaysia, became blind in one eye after she slipped and accidentally sprayed the weed killer paraquat in her face.

"It was raining. I fell down and the chemical shot straight into my eye," Murugasu, a 40-year-old mother of four, said in Teluk Intan, a town in northwestern Malaysia. "I was in and out of hospital for a whole year."

Paraquat is banned in the European Union and in Latin America. But it is widely used in China, India, the Philippines and Malaysia, where the government reversed a ban on the herbicide in 2006 after growers asked to be allowed to use it because of its low cost.

The following recalls have been announced in the United States:

_ GKI Foods Inc. is recalling a variety of peanut candies, because they could be contaminated with salmonella. This is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. No illness has been reported. The candies were available nationwide and sold under a variety of brand names.

JAPAN: 79 kilograms of salmonella-tainted peanut butter imported from U.S. last year PDF Print E-mail


Nearly 80 kilograms of salmonella-tainted peanut butter made in the United States were imported into Japan last year, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has announced.

The ministry said on Friday that 79 kilograms of peanut butter imported last January have been confirmed as the same product that caused a salmonella outbreak in the United States since last autumn, sickening 521 people and killing eight in 43 states.
