Until year 1990s there are limited consumer participation in standards and standardization activities. The needs of an organisation operating on social enterprise model needed to represent consumers at policy level.
Malaysian Association of Standards Users has been established in September 2004 and gained endorsement and support from Department of Standards Malaysia is a non-profit organization operating on social enterprise model
Focusing on users and beneficiaries of standards and compliance with standards i.e. Addressing consumer needs by enhancing industry/ business capacity. Standards Users working in the following areas:
- Capacity Building – train of trainer’s workshops, workshops, seminars, case studies.
 - Advocacy – represent users interests to advance market relevance of standards and voluntary or mandatory compliance with standards.
 - Awareness and Promotion Sessions – promote importance of consumers’ involvement in standards and balance stakeholder participation.
 - Reference Materials and Tools – Training Modules, self-assessment tools and coordinate standards development
 
Serving many stakeholders (namely: consumers, research institutions, industry and relevant agencies in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region) with interest in standards, safety, social responsibility and sustainable development.
Our approach is tailor-made to suit the stakeholder’s needs and included developing suitable and effective education materials, training materials, workshops, round-table discussions, surveys, studies, comparative testing, position papers and memorandum.
Standards Users is the only NGO that specialises on the importance of safety standards for consumer product and services.
